These and a few others are the only phones and tablets that currently have atmospheric sensors. The trouble with Voice Actions is that it's only well integrated with core Android functions. Simple, elegant and easy to use! Beautiful Widgets is a fine and highly customisable service. A further swipe shows the next week as a list with a brief summary of what can be expected. As it is, it's a touch gimmicky. It's Vlingo's depth of features and its ability to have a back-and-forth conversation with you that make it the closest thing Android users have to Siri. Today we shall talk about three weather apps that take advantage of the new notification options in Jelly Bean to elegantly present the weather at the notifications drop down pane. The Accuweather app is a very complete and free Android app, a global GPS-based weather center, giving you accurate and localized weather information in over three million locations, updated hourly. If the app needs to do a web search or open an application, it'll prompt you to select an app, or it'll go to the browser and perform a search. Choose an app that you like most and do not forget to tell us what you think about them. Currently, Notification Weather can fetch data from Yahoo! Vlingo is great, but the most frustrating thing about the app is that it seems to go so far, only to stop short of perfection. The makers of Forecast built Dark Sky for iPhone, and in the process created one of the most beautiful weather apps for any smartphone platform. The Weather Bug Elite app lets you Check current conditions and forecasts, view animated Doppler radar images and get the latest local weather information and severe weather alerts for your city and thousands of locations around the world. It’s focus on rain is great for that purpose, but there’s a lack of information about wind or UV index, which are all standard in other weather apps. Finally, Voice Search is a simple command-response application, as in, you speak a command and it replies with whatever it has. If we could only suggest one, Vlingo is definitely the most mature application with its hooks into the most services. There's no back-and-forth with Voice Actions. Atmospheric pressure changes with altitude, so comparing the pressure reading collected from a phone against readings taken from nearby stationary weather stations will help pinpoint the altitude of the phone. This is a simple and clean app and if you are not looking for special features, then this is definitely one of the best weather apps for your Android phone for you. Just install the app, open it and configure it as you prefer and enjoy weather updates just by dropping down the notification bar. The app will detect your location automatically and will show you, by default, the current conditions. The good news for Android users watching Siri's development is that there are plenty of alternatives and options that bring the promise of text-to-speech and speech-to-speech to Android devices. Just set your phone or tablet next to the speaker of your marine radio or any other shortwave receiver with sideband capability and start recording weather charts and images. One of the remarkable features of The Weather Channel App is integration with Facebook. Also the exquisitely realistic video effects of cloudiness, rain and snow along with the vivid sensation of current or future weather makes it a mind-boggling weather app. It does exactly what most users need it to do; look good and tell you the weather. The app definitely needs some improvements, and when testing it, I ran into a number of bugs and errors. Settings up the app is pretty simple and has everything you would expect in a basic weather app. Still, there are plenty solid options to give Siri a run for its money, and expect them all to improve very shortly. See the image below. The app has a large button you press once to make the app start listening. We never felt totally confident using Arcus as our only weather app; it was more of a complement to a more traditional one (our choice for the UK is Met Office Weather). This includes the temperature, how far away the nearest rain is, and the prospects of rain in the next hour, displayed on a graph. Best of all, if it understands, it'll respond. There you will find sliders to adjust the intensity of the overlay effect and select which types of weather conditions you want shown. Below you will find a list of the best weather apps for your Android phone. It currently works in the US and UK, and we found that the conditions change so quickly in the UK that the ultra-precise predictions were frequently of questionable value. The orders of magnitude more atmospheric pressure data they could collect from Android phones could make a big difference. The app is great for telling you if you need to take an umbrella if you’re going out right now, but for predictions more than a couple of hours ahead would be no more accurate than other services can provide. It also warns you for severe weather conditions like thunderstorms, snow, ice, high winds and tornadoes. Also read: Downgrade apps to an older version on an Android phone or tablet Still, if you like weather apps Arcus is worth trying. You can obviously set location and update interval, time format and temperature unit used. Basic but easy to understand and use. Then there is WeatherPro app that you can buy for Rs 164. Highlights include global satellite plus radar for the USA, UK and much of Europe. Other than this, get some basic overview of the weather forecast on hourly, 36 hours and 10 days basis as well. With a bit more polish and a few extra features it could turn into something great—but don’t uninstall your main weather app just yet. Here are a look at your options. I love the fact it works so well with the look and feel of Android 4. It wins for being the most customizable, and the app with the largest library of in-app commands and pass-through terms. Umbrella is a very simple Android weather app, which answers every day one of the most important weather questions: Do I need to take an umbrella with me or not? But if researchers can incorporate a large volume of pressure readings into climate models to define features associated with severe weather events, they can begin predicting when a severe storm will hit a specific part of a city up to six hours in advance. Limited to 4 day forecasts. Our recent showdown article between the awesome 1Weather and BeWeather demonstrated highly functional and popular apps that wow users with their design and features. Your mileage with Edwin may vary, but at the very least it'll talk back to you. Mass and his colleagues at UW were on the lookout for sources of atmospheric pressure data to include in their models in hopes of improving weather prediction. Check out this video to see SpeakToIt Assistant in action. Vlingo has text-to-speech and speech-to-speech clients for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia, and Windows Mobile, and while none of them have particularly deep integration with their respective operating system, the app does reach beyond core applications and comes closest to the kind of back-and-forth with advanced commands that Siri offers. That's why it is a good idea to check the current weather conditions and the weather forecast on your Android phone, using one of the weather apps that are available in the Android Market. Furthermore, you get lightning strike and alert polygon vectors map layers and 3-day home screen forecast widgets. It helps to be informed about the weather conditions before deciding to plan these things. Now how to do that in case you are not a keen follower of weather updates provided by TV news channels, and even if you do, they might not provide you with a forecast much in advance so that you can plan accordingly. It also allows you to make your voice commands a bit more conversational. It is only meant for the notifications panel. Also, presumably most users of the app spend most of their time on land, limiting the types of weather conditions researchers might be able to better predict. None of the apps currently available for Android are quite as well integrated with the OS as Siri is be with iOS (sorry), but some of them come closer than others, and you can bet that all of them will be updated and improved now that Siri is available for iOS. Compared to Beautiful Widgets - which gives you more options than you might need - this is breeze to set up. DroidNavtex now in Play Store Special audio filters even decode very weak signals through the microphone and make DroidNavtex a very affordable alternative to high priced decoders. If they get enough buy-in from Android owners, you may be able to receive warning hours in advance about thunderstorms and tornadoes coming to your precise location with far more certainty than you can today. You can get the HD version of the same app for about Rs 219. In some cases, Edwin forgot my location and couldn't retrieve weather information, and in others it stopped being able to obtain weather information entirely. You can ask it to find stock information for you, what the weather is in a far-off place, to send an email or SMS, update your social networks, check-in to a location on Foursquare, and more. Additionally, you need to actually tap the Voice Search icon (or long-press the search key) every time you want to issue a request, which makes it less than ideal for hands-free situations, like when you're driving. As the very name suggest, do not expect a homescreen widget from this app. The three weather apps capable of this feature are Notification Weather. Atmospheric scientists are working with an app developer to take air pressure information that is already being collected from thousands of Android phones and feed it into sophisticated new climate models. Tap on ‘Weather’ and you’ll see all weather info of your location at the current time covering temperature, Dew point, Relative humidity, wind speed, time of sunrise and sunset. It offers detailed still images indicating the weather, some truly awesome widgets and just enough of a forecast to arm you for bad weather without the need to know the chance of precipitation or wind-speed expected in 10 days time. The same is true for a number of Vlingo's other features as well. However, that is perhaps why I quite like it. Ultimately, the idea is that the forecasts could feed back into an app that accurately shows when and where storms are coming. If you wish to have animated weather just as you unlock your device, enable the unlock animations feature and let the magic happen. However the developers have said they have no plans to bring Dark Sky to Android. With expandable, actionable and prioritized notifications, developers can manage their apps and take control of what goes on when a notification is presented to the user. Vlingo allows you to do all of the basics: you can send SMS messages and emails, place phone calls, and search the web. Arcus design and useability Arcus has a minimalist, monchrome style that conforms with the Holo design guidelines. Best of all, they're all free. The Most Flexible: SpeakToIt Assistant SpeakToIt Assistant is a relatively new speech-to-speech and speech-to-text assistant in the Android market. If you want a no-fuss weather app, this is ideal for you. Weather, Open Weather Map and World Weather Online. It has a nice interface, clean design, good settings options. You can choose weather data auto refresh interval ranging from 10 minutes to 8 hours. It's speech-to-text engine is good, and unlike Voice Actions, it rarely misinterpreted my contact names or spoken words. Unfortunately, SpeakToIt Assistant tries very hard to be a personal assistant on the surface that some of the finer touches are lost. The app is available in both free and paid basis. No one wants to get caught in a snow storm or a rain shower. Still, SpeakToIt Assistant is in beta, and most of its shortcomings can be easily overcome with additional development. Usefulness: For checking out the weather and telling the time, it does a perfect job. Note that it requires an internet connectivity to work. Similarly, SpeakToIt Assistant may be new and still rough around the edges, but it has a lot of potential and it gives you a very personable and customizable caricature to interact with. That's not true—Siri does more than Voie Actions, but Voice Actions is the closest thing Android users to a voice-operated personal assistant. The app also has a difficult time processing some commands, like navigation and SMS messages—it'll understand that you want to navigate, and it'll understand that you want to send an SMS message, but it won't pick up where you want to go or who you want to send the message to. Sheehy and Jones have only just started looking into privacy implications. Do you want to know the weather forecast for your region or your holiday destination? Arcus also doesn’t make use of the full forecast. Step 1: Install Weatherback Wallpaper Step 2: Tweak Settings The free version of the app does not come with as many customization options as the $1. SpeakToIt definitely understands everything that Voice Actions understands and then some. Arcus Weather is not a clone of Dark Sky—although its package name does contain the word darksky. A swipe to the right shows the forecast fro the next two days, split by hour, in both graph and list form. You can also launch applications through Vlingo by speaking their name, or update Facebook and Twitter through the app. Adding this would provide a major upgrade to Arcus. So Which Is the Best? You can rid the app of ads for 60p, upgrade the widget for ?1. They envision different levels of sharing that end users can choose from, including sharing only with academic researchers or in any way the developers see fit. The Most Conversational: Edwin Edwin is a utility we've covered before. None of them are perfect, and they're not deeply integrated with all of the common features and functions that you would expect from a real voice-activated assistant. Another similar app is the Weather Bug that gives you the access to the largest network of professional weather stations in North America and thousands of locations around the world which has never been easier. If it's wrong, you reissue the command by starting over. Edwin's strength is in how conversational the app is. When everyone got their first look at Siri on the iPhone 4S, most people jumped to the assumption that Siri was just Voice Actions for iOS. The app can also post items to your Evernote account, and it greets you—sometimes with your name after you've said it aloud—when you open the application. It requires little setup. There are hurdles before Mass can even get the data. Notification Weather is only available to users with devices running Android 4. But Mass thinks they may be able to significantly improve predictions of thunderstorms and tornadoes over land. The app prides itself on being customizable, and on giving you a cartoon avatar that you can customize and configure to be your personal assistant. It’s the closest thing Android has to Dark Sky, and one of the few hyper-local forecasting apps on Android. Grammar errors in the on-screen text make it difficult to work with at times, and the fact that you have to tap a small microphone button on-screen every time you want to speak to the application difficult to use when driving or if you want a hands-free experience. However, its competition is hot on its heels. How good is forecast. Needless to say that the app also comes with some cool weather clock widgets to embellish your homescreen. If it has a direct response, it'll speak it out loud. But is it any good? Until then, enjoy this pretty but perfectly functional app for free. Beautiful Widgets: When it comes to a weather app, the Beautiful Widgets app is my personal favorite. If you haven't looked into voice recognition apps on Android before, you may be surprised at how many applications get the job done. Because pressure changes with elevation, it helps to tie the pressure data to a phone in order to determine if the pressure is in fact changing or if the reading is changing because the phone user has moved up a hill or an elevator. It's also the one under the most active development, and the one with the best hands-free and speech-to-speech functionality. The developers behind SpeakToIt claim that it's always learning, and they're working to give the app more commands that it can directly respond to with each update. Forecasts are given for the next 36 hours or next 10 days. But every now and then, I'm caught off guard by a particularly chilly or hot day—no one wants to be the only person walking around with a T-shirt and sandals on a rainy, 50-degree day. So, choose a one, free or the paid, according to your needs, the app’s features and your pocket and keep yourself updated with the weather for your location and around for the current moment or the future forecast so that you can plan your outings accordingly and weather may not be the hindrance. Belo is a screenshot with all three apps at work. The only real problem with Vlingo is that too many of its commands shunt you to other applications that have no voice-activated features. The big problem with Edwin is that it doesn't have a rich command list of its own, and when it doesn't understand something, it suffers the same problem Voice Actions does: it just fails. The App has a very intuitive user interface. For any other query, the app’s ‘Tips and Tricks’ section under ‘Settings’ has done a very good job. The key features are the following: HF Weather Fax for Android After weeks of programming I finished a new Android App – HF Weather Fax. Check out this video to see Vlingo in action. So, this was a list of some of the best weather apps for your Android phone with Jelly Bean that can also show weather info at the Notifications drop down panel. Unlike some of the other applications, you can make your assistant male or female, customize their appearance, and change their voice, albeit slightly. Also read: Chromecast 2nd gen: Everything you need to know about the update Pretty simple stuff, then. When Mass first talked to Sheehy and Jones earlier this year, they were collecting only around 80 data points an hour worldwide. But you need to shed some bucks too for a unique and mind-boggling experience. Interested in more in depth weather info? You start the app and you have to provide your location with its Voice Search or let the app determine it just by the click of button right next to the ‘Voice Search’ icon. Get it on your Android phones and get the most accurate and relevant weather information whenever the weather matters to you. The Weather Channel This free app from the famous TV channel shows you the current weather conditions with lots of details like fully customized weather maps, temperature, sunset, sunrise, humidity and UV index for over 1. Ask about another city, and the app will look it up and respond there as well. Downloads of the app grew to around 14,000 worldwide, resulting in around 3,000 to 4,000 readings per hour, which Mass says is starting to be useful. You can activate it to get short weather info at the notification center of your Android phone with Jelly Bean.
